Homemade Chicken Bone Broth

Many of us grew up eating some sort of broth based soup when we were sick or recovering from an illness. Although soup from a can may be quick and easy, it doesn’t provide the same nutritional benefit as a homemade broth does. Homemade broth from animals bones (and other parts such as the feet and neck…if you dare 🙂 ), provides the body with many minerals and other compounds that have been shown to promote healing of the gut as well as a boost in immunity.

Homemade Chicken Bone Broth

4-5 lbs. chicken bones, rinsed and cleaned
2 T apple cider vinegar (optional)
Sprinkle of salt
herbs/spices/vegetables to taste (basil, oregano, onion, celery, carrots…)

Place ingredients in a large crock pot that is filled with water. Cook on low for 12-24 hours. This slow process draws the minerals and other compounds out of the bones which make the broth very beneficial for gut health and immunity.

Strain the fat and solids and save the broth to use in soups, casseroles, or for cooking beans or rice.
